Common App, Coalition, and Direct Applications: Which to Use

Most students use the Common App, but it is not the only route, and some schools have their own. Here is how the platforms compare and how to stay organized.

Before you write a word, you have to know where you are applying and through what. Most US colleges accept the Common App, but some use other platforms or their own systems, and a few large public universities run entirely separate applications. Sorting this early keeps you from a nasty surprise in December.

The Common App is the default

The Common Application lets you fill out one core application, including your personal essay and activities, and send it to many schools, each of which may add its own supplements. Because most colleges accept it, it is the natural home base for the majority of applicants and the place your main essay will live.

Other routes you might encounter

Some schools use an alternative shared platform, so check which one each college prefers.
Certain large public university systems have their own applications separate from the Common App.
A handful of schools have a direct application on their own website.
Some colleges accept more than one platform and say they have no preference between them.

Check the application method for every school on your list before you start. A school that only takes its own application can be easy to overlook until it is nearly too late.

Stay organized across platforms

Once you know which platforms your schools use, make a simple tracker: each school, its platform, its deadline, its required forms, and its supplements. Applying across two or three systems is manageable, but only if you can see everything in one place. The tools you use matter less than not losing a deadline in the shuffle, which is exactly the kind of thing a good tracker prevents.
