Some colleges track how much you engage with them, and some ignore it entirely. Here is how to tell which is which and what is worth your time.

Demonstrated interest is the idea that some colleges track how engaged you are and factor it into decisions, partly to protect their yield. It is real at some schools and irrelevant at others, so the first step is figuring out where each school on your list stands.

Find out whether a school considers it

Colleges disclose this in their Common Data Set under the admission factors section, where level of applicant's interest is listed as considered, important, or not considered. A quick search for a school's name plus Common Data Set will usually turn it up. Highly selective schools that reject most applicants often say they do not track it, because they have plenty of yield either way.

Do not spend energy on demonstrated interest at schools that openly say they ignore it. Spend that time on your essays, which every school reads.

What actually counts when it does matter
