Legacy admissions, giving an edge to the children of alumni, has been part of selective admissions for a long time and is now under real pressure. Several states and schools have limited or ended it, and the trend is toward less weight, not more. If you have a legacy connection, it is worth understanding what it actually buys.

Where it still applies, it is a tiebreaker at most

At schools that still consider legacy, it generally works as a small boost among otherwise competitive applicants, not a golden ticket. It might tip a close call, but it will not carry an application that is not already strong. Your grades, courses, essays, and activities still have to stand on their own.

Some colleges have publicly ended legacy preference entirely. Check each school's current policy rather than assuming, because this is changing quickly.

How to note it without leaning on it

If a family member attended, applications usually have a place to indicate it, and that is enough. You do not need to build your essays around the connection. An essay that reads as a plea based on family history tends to land worse than one that shows who you are. Mention it where the form asks, then let the rest of your application do the work.

If you have no connection, do not worry about it

Most admitted students at most schools are not legacies, and the share of the class touched by legacy is smaller than the internet suggests. Build your list on fit and your application on substance. Legacy is a minor factor at the schools that use it and a nonfactor everywhere else, so it should not shape your strategy.
