A waitlist is not a rejection, but it is not a plan either. Here is how to keep the door open while you commit to a school that already wants you.

A waitlist offer is genuinely in-between: the school did not say no, but it did not say yes. Waitlist odds vary widely and are often low, so the right move is to do the few things that help while refusing to bet your spring on it.

First, secure a school you got into

Before anything else, commit to a college that admitted you and place your deposit by the deadline. This is not giving up on the waitlist. It is making sure you have a home in the fall no matter what happens. Waitlists can move late and unpredictably, and you never want to be left without a confirmed spot.

Deposit at a school you are happy about first, then pursue the waitlist. Hope is not a plan, and waitlist movement is never guaranteed.

Then, if you still want the waitlist school

2Send a short letter of continued interest confirming the school is your top choice and why.
3Add one or two meaningful updates: a new grade, award, or accomplishment since you applied.
4Follow the school's instructions exactly, and do not flood the office with messages.

Keep it in perspective

You cannot control waitlist decisions, and many strong applicants are never pulled off. Do the honest, brief work of showing interest, then invest your energy in getting excited about the school you committed to. If the waitlist comes through, wonderful. If it does not, you already have a good place to be.
